Came across this in the Reuters article (below) this morning. It’s uncommon but very eggcornic.
Also there’s a tomato plight going around that infects tomatoes.

In a way that pretty much makes the case that these are eggcorns. It is parallel to the way that the person calling an acorn an eggcorn actually means the egg.

But you are right that, although (mis)hearing the phrase “tomato blight†was probably involved in the phrase “tomato plight†coming into the writers’ heads, these are not cases of the tomatoes being in a plight (from the blight) but of the writers’ being in a plight related to (the lack of) tomatoes. I would suppose that (1) the phrase “tomato plight†is formed as an eggcorn from the phrase “tomato blightâ€, and then (2) it gets extended from the meaning “a problem that tomatoes have†to be “a problem having to do with tomatoes (or the lack thereof)â€.
