A “preemptive” strike is one conducted before an opponent’s strike, so to preclude it. “Presumptive” means “based on probability and assumption”—without hard, fast evidence. Confusion about goals and claims could surely lead one to mistake these words. Furthermore, “presumption” has the additional meaning of “audacity,” so this may provide yet another source for misinterpretation when uttering the eggcorn “presumptive strike.”
