'hyenas crime' for 'heinous crime'

The pronunciation of heinous, usually teamed up with crime, is not entirely clear from its appearance. Dictionaries disagree, rhyming it with either greyness or Venus. (Come on – what would you have chosen?)

I’ve heard it pronounced “high-eenis” and “high-eenious” which is quite hyena-like. In addition, the poor hyena has an undeserved reputation as a sneaky cowardly scavenger – a natural criminal in our anthropomorphic version of the animal world.

I love it. Best new eggcorn in living memory. Today’s counts show the following number of genuine, verified google hits: 5 hyena’s crime, 54 hyenas crime, 22 hyenous crime, 5 hyenas act, and 9 hyena’s act.

Hyenous pronunciation from the Economic Hit Man.

Not really up there with “hyenas crime”, which is excellent.
