"Off one's own back" instead of "Off one's own bat".

This seems to be an eggcorn for “off one’s own bat”, meaning doing something without being told to. Perhaps users are influenced by phrases like “off a duck’s back”, and “covering one’s back”. Is this just a British expression, related to cricket?
