Antiquated for acquainted

Bumped into someone substituting “antiquated” for “acquainted” in the phrase “acquainted with”.

“Even as antiquated as we are with the known facts…” (web forum comment)

“take time out of your busy schedule to antiquated with the facts,” (blog post comment)
http://theridgewoodblog.net/trump-if-hi … fair-game/

“we encourage you to spend a few minutes getting antiquated with the system”
http://vic.readthedocs.org/en/latest/De … -with-git/

“Read the aims of the Felsham Co-operative and become antiquated with what we are trying to achieve”
http://www.felshamroad.org

“I wanted to go back and get re-antiquated with our first bike project” (blog post)

I have no idea if it’s an eggcorn but it amused me.

Re: Antiquated for acquainted

Looks like your textbook Cupertinian silicism, I think. A WTF typo of the form of aintquated, for example, or aincquated or aitcquated, are all replaced by “antiquated” by google.

There is an alternative home on this site for goofups that don’t make eggcorn sense, or do so only obliquely. That is the Slips, innovations and reshapings forum that invites “Discussions about things that aren’t (necessarily) eggcorns.” These posts can be equally interesting and entertaining, not to say endearing. That forum is underutilised. Posts to the Slips forum will also show up in proper order on the welcome page of this site.

Hmmm. It was just a couple years or so ago that at least a couple of the senior eggcornistas on this site (including you?) advised me to post more posts to the “Contribute” section and less to other sections such as the “Slips, innovations and reshapings” section. Since then, I’ve been very liberal as to what I’d consider possible eggcorns, to fit as many posts into that category as possible. Now it sounds like you want to shift the action a little more to the “Slips, innovations and reshapings” section.

Re: Antiquated for acquainted

I looked up those old posts and saw why you thought that way, which had puzzled me. I see the wisdom in Pat’s declaration that one should post in whatever section one feels inclined to post. They all show up on the front page.
