Ironically, the best book on the history of genealogy in North America has been written by a European. Family Trees (Harvard, 2013), is authored by François Weil, a high-profile French historian who specializes in American history. In his discussion of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Weil mentions a letter written by a DAR member, Elizabeth S. Rogers of Philadelphia. She wrote that her genealogy would be “a record of my ancestory.â€
Ms. Rogers has tapped into a strong underground stream of speakers who believe that “ancestry†has the word “story†in it. The Google Ngram database suggests that as many as one out of every 500 examples of “ancestry†in published works ends us as “ancestory.â€
Our database includes the rarer change of “ancestor†into “ansister.â€
