Ambience, surroundings and environs all turn on root words for revolving or encircling. Ambience entered English twice, the second time as a vogue word, pronounced to add a continental touch, as in AWmbiAWnce. It sometimes adopts the French spelling as well, ambiance. The ambitious pronunciation is surely the origin for the eggcorn enviance that shows up on travel review sites to describe the atmosphere of vacation spots and eateries. A mix of ambiance and environment, I suspect, pronounced as AWnviAWnce.

I think you’re right. It does say straight out “envy+ence”. Another primer might be the pronunciation of envelope as awnvelope.
