The sherry on the cake

The icing on the cake, as an idiomatic expression describing the clincher, the ultimate selling point, the best part of all, is fairly recent in origin, according to the n-grams. It doesn’t seem to go back more than a few decades. Calling it a “cherry on the cake” is more recent yet. The latter might be a blend with “with a cherry on top”, as in “Pretty pretty please with a cherry on top.” We’ve often noted that recent phrases may be particularly prone to be reimagined, so that the acorn and its eggcorn are of similar vintage. I came across the sherry on the cake while perusing an online review. The sherry on the cake would be the ingredient that gives it its special flavour.

Re: The sherry on the cake

Most of the several hundred of these come from India for some reason – don’t they have cherries there? Perhaps the approval of crowds could be described as clappy and cheery? Or maybe, as I’d prefer, that sherry is in the cake as well as on it.

The cheery on the cake however is the last competition called ‘laadoo oonth’, it tests the strength of the camel to see how much weight the camel can carry, man ...

We believe in the motto- client satisfaction is our prime earning and our very cheery on the cake. With our dedicated team and devoted work efforts, client service …

The cheery on the cake is that this Knock-out Punch Self-Defence spray comes with a free Pee Safe Toilet Seat Sanitizer; it is a toilet seat sanitizer that will keep you germ-free even when travelling and using public toilets. Isn’t that a great deal?
