Seen today in The Guardian:
He is a vindictive, nasty figure, infamous for verbally abusing supposed friends and threatening enemies. Bannon is a smarter version of Trump: he’s an aggressive self-promoter who name-drops to heighten his profile and woo bigger names, and then uses those bigger names as stepping stools to his next destination.â€
which prompted me to find
my best friend used me as a stepping stool in the social hierarchy of middle school
and others (the Bannon quote is a fair proportion of the exact phrase match for “as stepping stools”).
From what I can see AmE uses “step stool” when I might say “step ladder” or “library stool”, which I dare say are not exclusively BrE.
But the influence of “stepping stone” on “stepping stool” is eggcornish enough for me. But only just.
