"self-steam" for "self-esteem"

first spotted here (CW: sexism, fat shaming):

https://instagram.com/p/2BbNGIJK9P/

confirmed with a Twitter search (recommend you try it for examples)

plenty of people talking about having “self-steam” in place of “self-esteem”

I believe the confusion is that “self-steam” sounds like it might be some form of generative process, as if one ran on steam (like a steam engine), and self-steam is the ability to produce your own steam

Re: "self-steam" for "self-esteem"

If by “make an entry” you mean to get this one onto the official Eggcorn Database list, yes, there is at least one more requirement: One of the few people authorized to add things to the list must find the time to do it. Given that there are at least dozens, if not scores or hundreds, of perfectly good eggcorns that haven’t yet been added to the list, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting. Try not to feel too listless :^D
But of course we can still enjoy finding and discussing them regardless of whether they ever make it onto the list.

No one is entirely alone. Everyone has multiple personalities that together make up your own home team. Sometimes your team is up, and sometimes your self’s team is on the bottom of the rankings. You need to maintain the self’s team spirit.

when I hang around her my selfs team was low

But they do believe it, which is nice for their selfs team

David, how are things done here? Are these two separate eggcorns? “self-steam” and “self’s team”

Re: "self-steam" for "self-esteem"

In an organized world where we were genuinely trying to catalogue every possible eggcorn, blend, mondegreen, and piquant semantic confusion, as in the ambitious but quixotic Eggcorn Database, each separate eggcorn would have its own thread where we could soberly “candle it for eggcornhood.” But this is the eggcorn forum, where part of the fun, sometimes, is to riff on others’ entries and see where they lead. The resulting disorderly mayhem has been criticized previously but we seem to backslide into it regularly. The problem, obviously, is that it is ofttimes very difficult to know what has been considered previously. Take “self-steam.” It was entered here, though not in any particular depth, and new sightings are welcome.

So yes, self steam and selfs team are separate eggcorns, as long as selfs team is not just a typo. On this forum we have called different eggcorns sprouting from the same acorn, simblings. So there is that connection.

Re: "self-steam" for "self-esteem"

Not just what has been considered previously, but whether it is more useful (for what purposes) to consider two usages as distinct (thus to be categorized into separate entries) or the same.
.
It is a ubiquitous problem in linguistics, and, I suppose, in any other field of human knowledge, which as far as I can see always involves classification. Categories are like clouds more than like pigeon-hole boxes or honeycomb cells. When is it one cloud, when is it two or more?
.
Besides the fun (and probably as a result of it) gained from messing around with a category, finding new examples and variants, doing riffs on it and so on, the enlightenment it brings is much more profitable than the relatively shallow satisfaction of discussion-ending premature categorization.
.
I have loved the following quote since I first read it:

Knowledge—the fullest possible awareness—of the nature of law is the true way of escape from its shackles … The way to achieve liberation from the ‘confusion’ of thought on which language is based is not by attack or rebellion. The intrinsic nature of language makes all such attitudes puerile … It is not the freemen of a city who are likeliest to lose their way, and themselves, in its labyrinth of old and mazy streets; it is the simple-minded foreign nihilist making, with his honest-to-god intentions and suitcase, straight for the centre, like a sensible man.

(Owen Barfield, 1947.)
It is by playing around on, tooling back and forth along and working by means of the “labyrinth of old and mazy streets” that you come to know it; the “simple-minded foreign nihilist” knows a category when he sees one.
.
Still, all said and done, self (of/a) steam and self’s team are pretty clearly separate enough that yes, in the Database they should have separate entries.

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

Hi, I just found another exemplar of this on an online forum.

“I have finally decided to ask this foreign exchange student tomorrow (BTW I have major low self of steam so this is big for me) so please keep me in yalls harte”

candle it for eggcornhood

Delicious metaphor. I’ll no doubt steal it at some point.

Interesting and making more sense than (self of steam)

I’m not sure I’d agree. I can’t help but delight in the notion of a vaporous companion, some ethereal doppelganger that suffers damage on our behalf while we get on with the crushing business of existing.
On the other hand, some choose not to share even their …perspiration could it be?

Why do girls think that all i want to do is F*** because i have muscles I mean it harts my selfish steam I don’t think I’m GOD’s gift to girls and all …

Like you, losing weight at this stage is a major battle but pivotal to everything else , including my selfish steam.

Not too far from selfish steam, selfie steam is the drive to share your likeness on facebook.

I hate when people try to ruin Ariana’s selfie steam she’s beautiful idc what anyone says.

Re: "self-steam" for "self-esteem"

If we ever think we are going to run out of eggcorns to discover, we only have to look at the influence of new technologies on the language.
