"rile" and "rumple" for "ruffle"

We have discussed various substitutions for “ruffle” here, such as “roughle” and “rustle”. Here’s another one I’ve stumbled upon:

Man, this post is riling some feathers.

It looks like we have one of those linguistic fuzzy spots here. This one includes “ruffle”, “rile”, “roughle”, “rustle”, “rumple”, and what else?

Re: "rile" and "rumple" for "ruffle"

I had noticed over the years that I’d just unnecessarily roil the feathers of writers whenever I insisted on replacing their “alright” with my “all right.”

Oh yeah—roil is at least peripherally involved in this fuzzy spot, with tendrils reaching towards “roll” and “boil”.

Re: "rile" and "rumple" for "ruffle"

And look at this one:

That’s Horschel, whose brash and confident attitude has helped him compete on the PGA Tour — winning the Zurich Classic in New Orleans this spring — and also rifling some feathers along the way. He reportedly drew the ire of a then-teenage Rory McIlroy during the 2007 Walker Cup.

And this:

Can’t see what the intent of the comment is really other than raffling some feathers…

Cor Lemmers I can see that i’m raffling some feathers here and Cor Lemmers is one of them…

But I doubt a case for the eggcornicity of “raffling” for “ruffling” can be made, meaning-wise.

Re: "rile" and "rumple" for "ruffle"

And here’s yet another variation that falls within this ever-enlarging fuzzy spot, “rallied” for “riled”:

And when I was on the anchor desk, they would instruct you to egg on these guests and try to get them, you know, rallied up, to really fire off their anti-American talking points.

Re: "rile" and "rumple" for "ruffle"

Almost four years ago in this thread I said:

It looks like we have one of those linguistic fuzzy spots here. This one includes ruffle, rile, roughle, rustle, rumple, and what else?

Having since then seen a few other words that may partake of this fuzzy spot, I think I can add rifle, riffle, raffle, roil, rally, and ripple to this list. All of them except ripple have shown up earlier in this thread. (Rifle << >>riffle is also discussed here.) Ripple I got from Merriam-Webster:

riffle…transitive verb
1 : to ruffle slightly : ripple

Most of these share a connotation of something’s being put into disarray, at least temporarily, as when we shuffle through something like a deck of cards or sheaf of papers. Even rustle (the origin of which may be onomatopoeic) could refer to the sound made by such shuffling. (In the case of rile, the disarray would be emotional rather than physical.) A couple of the listed words, such as raffle and rally, have a sound-only connection to the fuzzy spot without any obvious meaning connection.
