When widespread eggcorns like this one turn up, the omega-corn recedes a bit into the distance.

Another pair of words where it’s hard to separate the original idiom from the transformation. Like “home/hone in on.”

We also have a lot of examples of “tinkled pink” Sort of an anticipation error eggcorn.
