I imagine people who say “shaw” for “shawl” are assuming the garment is named after someone named Shaw. If so, that qualifies this substitution as the type of eggcorn known as a Lehmann, if I’m not mistaken.

If it were a Lehman, I’d expect to see some people capitalizing it. Seems like it might be more of a phonetic spelling (the “L” at the end of “shawl” can be really hard to hear).
