Manufacturers of nappies/diapers place great emphasis on the softness of their products, which is reflected in the product named ‘Pampers’. ‘Pampas-grass’ is a popular garden plant notable for the softness and whiteness of its ornamental flower-heads which perhaps by this associaton has been eggcorned into ‘Pampers grass’.
I’ve just found a correspondent on a gardening forum who believes that ‘Pampers’, ”...use the Pampers grass as the absorbent stuff in the nappy, so that why it smelt of nappies”.
