back in the folds < fold

[the letters] were written to serve the specific purpose of being accepted back in the folds of her family.

As a result of efforts to bring the sect back into the folds of Judaism they also disparaged the Christian books as fiction,

So long as you show repentance, and some sort of remorse, you will be accepted back into the folds. Men, the men in my family, can do no harm until they do and then they are absolved it of almost immediately.

There seem to be a lot of them.

No reference to a sheepfold is apparently understood. The folds probably have something to do with being enfolded in clothing, being folded in people’s arms, clasped to the family bosom, or something of the sort. Some sort of binding into place with folds of cloth, perhaps mixed with being “in the toils” of someone else, may be involved.

Love these stealth eggcorns. Good spotting. “Fold” appeared as a stealth eggcorn earlier in this form, in connection with “blindfold:” http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … hp?id=3979

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
