sourly < sorely

We have had sore grapes, but not, I think, this:

they had been sourly mistaken

if you think this somehow makes you my equal, you are about to be sourly mistaken.

If he thought he could intimidate him, he was sourly mistaken.

King William was absent, his presence sourly missed and so important.

Wisdom and compassion that should have filled his gray and balding head was sourly lacking.

It is certainly true that being mistaken (missing someone, etc.) sometimes leaves you more sour than sore.

Yes, several variations on that, going in both directions, here. The ”-ly” variation is to be expected.
