"Spike" for "spite"

Nose removal will have a forceful effect on the face.

But it seems too late your clarion call comes in to endeavour saving our buddies from cutting their noses to spike their faces!

Starting to believe certain people on here avoid my offers just because of jealously…talk about cutting off your nose to spike your face!

This could have happened on any airline. So don’t cut off Delta to spike your face.

Possibly a volleyball image behind this switch.

Re: "Spike" for "spite"

I immediately got a picture of driving a metal spike into something, to render it inoperable. (What is the standard image for that one, I can’t bring it to mind. I seem to have some kind of memory of some Luddite types (but more modern-era) disabling others’ machinery by spiking it.)

we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

Re: "Spike" for "spite"

Two things come to mind. First, tree-spiking: anti-logging people have hammered metal spikes into at-risk trees to make chainsawing them a dangerous proposition, and it got a lot of press in the early ‘90s. Second, and approximately contemporaneous with the original Luddites, is spiking cannons: to disable muzzle-loading cannons by firmly hammering a tapered piece of metal into the touch-hole that was used to set them off. Often done before retreating from a fortification to deny the enemy the use of its artillery.

Re: "Spike" for "spite"

Spike for spite was originally suggested by the drastic makeup suggestion, to cut off your nose to spice your face.

When an ex was being pissy about something I told him that he was “cutting his nose off to spite his face.” A few weeks later, when I was being stubborn, he told me I was “spicing my nose.” Nothing like being doubled over with laughter to bring an argument to a crashing halt.

Was his nose cut off to spice his face ? What is the origin of that phrase, anyone know ?

These wealthy elites want us slaves to continue to make them richer. You have cut off your noses to spice your face on this one and I fear that you will be too proud or too ignorant to admit your mistake.
