Why is there such a drift between US and Russia? When did it start?
When a separation is only gradual (the two sides drift apart), even though the final result is a definite separation (a rift) this makes plenty of sense, to the point where it may be just a reasonable normal usage rather than anything eggcornish. E.g.

As the last couple of examples indicate, rafting rather than drifting may be a target instead (or as well). The geological term rifting occurs especially in plate-tectonics discussions, and means, as you might think, drifting apart until a rift is formed, and can easily be extended to e.g. the international relations sphere of the first quote. All in all, I am much less sanguine about eggcornhood of the examples in this direction.
