Also obviously, the grimmer something is, the more likely it will make you grimace when you are trying to be stoic about it. Also, many speakers drop or lenite (to the point of oblivion) the t of a word-final st combination, so grimace might easily be thought to have come from grimmest .

I love the smiles and we need, as a song reminds me so well, put on a happy face and keep smiling even in the grimace of situations here.
(They might really have meant “grimace†in that last example, as a contrast to the repeated smil(ing) in the context. The first example, recorded nearly 20 years ago, was spoken, and I may have misheard it.) There are probably more out there.
