Could this be a double eggcorn? When I was a child comics arrived periodically from relatives in Canada and I clearly recall being fascinated and horrified by Little Orphan Annie’s empty ‘OO’ of eyes. Yes, I dotted them.
“Crossing the tees” could mean resisting that game of golf but I prefer the less likely River Tees in N E England.
