“How have you managed to avoid the trappings of fame at such a young age?” By not yet having been paid, I presume. I heard that question asked on the radio recently.
Trappings is related to drapings via an Anglo-Norman word for cloth. In Quebec, we still change the draps on the bed. Trappings were originally the ornamentation or the harness on a horse; the word wound its way through Anglo-Norman, from Med. Latin, Frankish, Germanic, and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *drÄp-, *drÄb- (“ragâ€), according to Wiktionary. Confusing trappings with traps seems to be a fairly common pitfall on the web. I don’t think it’s an eggcorn, but more a piquant malapropism.
Without the kind of blueblood blueprint that dictates etiquette that old-monied families in Europe or America follow, the children of these newly rich families (the eldest, who are the same age as Ivanka) have fallen into the trappings of those with too high a credit card limit and not enough taste.

Despite the fact that her father has so relished in projecting an image of lavish, flamboyant wealth, Ivanka has not fell into the trappings of what Chinese consider “rich kid†behavior.

No one tells you how to avoid the trappings of success. That you figure out by brutally going through experiences.

The actor credits his close-knit family for his down-to-earth demeanor and ability to avoid the trappings of success.
“I can’t go too far off the handle because my mother lives five minutes away,” he said.

Do you walk, drive, or fly off the handle?

Nice!
.
Re the final question, all of the above, I suppose.

we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

Seems like some kind of confusion is at work.
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
