I always thought that ‘whiteboard” was actually “wipeboard” because you wipe it clean with an eraser. Also, not all whiteboards are white. It wasn’t until I was in a linguistics class and we were talking about creating new words by compounding (white + board = whiteboard) that I realized I’d been using an eggcorn!

Google says that you are not alone. Just one example of many:

It’s so prevalent that it’s getting on for a standard variation.
Unfortunately you are not alone in spotting it either:

Some friendly soul will be along with some advice about searching the database first. If not, I will, when I’ve got time.
Still a good one. Happy hunting!

‘’When you want to post something here, go to the Eggcorn Database page first and search for something apropos (e.g. in this case for “wipeboardâ€) in the second search window (the Google search) on that page. That way you can add your observation to the already reported ones. We already have far too many multiple observations of the same eggcorn candidates in separate posts. It’s also worth looking at the Internet generally to document whatever you have seen or heard. It is surprisingly rare that you will fail to do so’’

Wipeboard is a first-class eggcorn (the connection so obvious yet so surprising), and a perp’s confession is the gold standard. I had somehow missed the other citation, and this made my day.
