In these variations on “oh-hum”, I can see affinities with a bored, dismissive or resigned “oh” as in “oh well”, as well as “hmmm”, a sound one might make when underwhelmed, as opposed to whooping with excitement. It actually makes more sense than the acorn “ho-hum”, as “ho” is a bit too peppy for conveying boredom or lack of excitement.
