Beauty, Dixon. Solid eggcorns in my book. The crest of the moon would resemble the crest of a wave – the part that sticks up. The crescent of the wave is just poetry. These two had me looking up crest to be sure that there was no direct etymological connection, which there does not appear to be. Very nice.

Hmmm…yeah, that’s the ticket! I can visualize a lizard with his colorful crest pumped up to attract a mate, or a crest on a knight’s helmet or a coat of arms. The association of “crest” with “high point” or “peak” could also affect that of “crest” with “credit”. My one reservation in calling it an eggcorn is that I only found two or three examples online, though perhaps different search terms would turn up a few more.
