phase/faze out

Not a particularly interesting one I’m afraid, but perhaps eggcornable anyway. To phase out obviously means to remove or replace over a period of time, at which point I suppose another ‘phase’ takes over. If ‘faze’ means to surprise, worry, disturb or embarrass then to ‘faze out’ would mean the gradual removal of such things. 246 million ghits for ‘phase out’ but a very respectable 2,240,000 for its putative eggcorn. Could the ghost of Captain Kirk be hovering around here?

Re: phase/faze out

And it’s a round-tripper, as is shown by the Eggcorn Database entry.

Here’s the example I encountered recently:

Jantos acknowledged that it’s a tradition that has been around for so long, it doesn’t phase most locals.
