Asphalt emulsion, by definition, is a product that is thicksotropic in nature. “Thicksotropic†is defined as any liquid that inherently becomes thicker or ‘gels’ over time.

I heard ketchup being described as thixotropic, and I knew right away that not everyone would take it the right way. Thixotropy is one of a series of names that are not easy to parse, for the characteristics of viscous fluids, such as paints and the fluids in your joints. Thixotropic fluids become thinner (not thicker) through time, by the application of shear forces (shaking, shocking, cursing the bottle and staring in the opening). The Greek roots mean “turning as a result of touch”, and so imply a process more than a state. If this definition has given you a thirst to know more, go look for rheopexy, rheotropy, and dilatant behaviour. I guess they call rheopexy “time-dependent dilatant behaviour” to avoid calling it time dilation.

I’ve come across thixotropy in the use of resins, ink , paint and glue, which sometimes have to be thick, or as some would have it, fick, to fulfil their function. With resin and glue, the objective is often to fix something.
It is a fixotropic liquid, so you have to shake it up to get it moving (a bit like tomato ketchup). It then becomes a thick liquid, the colour of weak tea, which is mixed with oil paint and other additives to make a workable paint.
Let dry for a day ,then mix the two part fixo tropic bar top coating 50,50. Then apply with a throwaway brush alittle thick, then blott of excess if you want w a towel.
The glue mortar is “rheologic fixotropic†by nature, meaning that when in motion ( as for example in a mixer) it will remain fluid until left to stand after which it will begin to set.
