"beg relief" for "beggar belief"

I found this in a fitness magazine, by someone who visits a gym in India:

“As with many places here, the name “gym” is used with a cavalier abandon that would be taken as misappropriation under the auspices of any trades description act. The antiquated contraptions that populate some of these places beg relief.”

I think this must be an eggcorn for beggar belief, unless there is some other meaning that I haven’t grasped.
