Hades for Haiti

I was once teaching a classroom full of 12 year olds about the history of the African Diaspora. I mentioned Haiti because I was doing Ph.D. reserach on Haiti and immigrants. One of my students raised his hand and politely inquired where Hades was. I laughed so hard I was crying. This works on two levels. One is that Haiti really is like Hades, as in going to hell in a handbasket. The other level is that it is equatorial and so hot as hell. Unfortunately, 12 year olds just don’t get either of these inferences and thought I was having a bit of a walkabout, red faced, laughing and tears streaming down my face. I actually use this anecdote quite a bit.
