"fjord (or fiord)" for "ford"

Received this in an email from a friend recently:

If you do decide to fjord the waters, be advised

A web search yielded quite a few examples, for instance:

... walk over the rough river cobble easily as a sidewalk, busting into the rushing current to fjord the river with the casual ease of much practice.
article

Paramedics and firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, but were on the other side of the river and unable to bring equipment around. However, Smart-Small and her wife were able to fjord the river and reach the paramedics
news

I am not sure why they say you have to fjord the river to get to it…...has the river changed course?
trip report

The still standing church has had a homecoming event annually, with families whose roots are in the nearby areas returning, such as Lower Barnes Run (Roane Co.) Sweet Potato Dan Connolly, who would fjord the river to attend.
article

The meaning connection between “ford” and “fjord” is strengthened by their both having ultimately sprung from the same PIE root. The verb “to ford” is uncommon enough nowadays that it’s no surprise that “fjord” would supplant it in some people’s minds.

Sweet. I image there are also people who call fjords “fords,” but this would be harder to find.
