Part-boiled for parboiled

This one is a little hard to google because in recipes, “one part boiled [something]” is not uncommon. But parboiled does mean “partly boiled,” usually in preparation for finishing by another method or later, such as with some whole-grain rice that is available commercially and can then by prepared much more quickly.

I think this one may qualify as it is substituting a more familiar term; on the other hand it doesn’t really bring about any new imagery, per se.

Here are a few examples:

Re: Part-boiled for parboiled

Eggcorn dynamics have been at work somewhere in the history of the word “parboiled,” since it appears to derive from the Latin “perbullire,” to boil thoroughly (the prefix “per-” means “completely” or “thoroughly,” as it does in the Latinate sources of the words “pervade,” “perverse,” “persist,”). Parboil can still refer to a good cooking, but nowadays it more commonly denotes partial boiling, perhaps by attraction to the English lexeme “part.” Changing the word to “part-boiling” advances the evolution another step, losing the word’s eggcornical roots by obscuring the contribution of “per-” to the history of the word.

Re: Part-boiled for parboiled

I always thought “parboiled” meant “boiled ahead of time.” And that because you were boiling ahead of time and adding it to something that was still being cooked, of course you didn’t boil it all the way, or it’d get soggy.

And I copyedit recipes—hoo-ee!

That would be like preboiled, then. There are lots of hits for preboiled rice, where parboiled would apply. One more case where the shift is quite literally correct and not easily called an eggcorn. Or is it.

There is an alternative: powerboiled. An apt description for overcooked vegetables, but a bit anticornical to parboiled.

The “Gosht Dum Biryani” is perfectly cooked with authentic flavours and isn’t powerboiled rice.

“Powerboiled” could be paralleled with “parboiled.” If you powerboil something, you do it quickly, and perhaps incompletely.

“Get swole” David? Have you been fraternizing with your students?
