"Crustashus" Period

A news announcer in southern California made this error: in speaking about a fossil find, he said “Crustacious Period” instead of “Cretaceous Period”. “Crustashus” conjures up the Age of Giant Crabs and Lobsters. (Yum!)

Re: "Crustashus" Period

Personally, I really like this one. Here’s what I wrote on Nov 20, 2005 (smooshed to fit):

“crustaceous period” for “cretaceous period”
About 300 ghits. Crustaceans didn’t first arise during the cretaceous period (144 to 65 mya), but it was a period of great expansion for them – maybe that’s an influence here. Our authors may be able to blame a half-remembered introductory course on geology or biology for the slip. Or maybe their spellcheckers are a more appropriate focus of censure. Examples:
He has studied the Nebraska Sand Hills for 10 years, which are similar to – albeit younger than – the dunes of Mongolia, which date back 70 million years to the crustaceous period.

Skeletons of marine invertebrates from the Lower Crustaceous period may also characterize some limestones.

So I decided to design some personalized labels for the guests. Forgetting that our computer is from the crustaceous period.

“He is correct, her conversation will last longer then the
crustaceous period,” Hotaru said.

Formed in the Crustaceous Period (over 60 million years ago), this area is much wetter than the Fraser Plateau and Fraser Basin.

Musicians often seem to be ahead of the curve in spotting potential eggcorns. The Australian rock band The Crustaceans issued a collection of their formative work as “The Early Crustaceous Period” in 2004.
