Wakes eggcornish associations in my mind (with “rictusâ€, stretching and straining, that sort of thing), though it quite possibly did not for the authors.
There was a major earthquake in Oaxaca near the club med resort of Huatulco on the coast. 7.4 was the first reading of the Rictor scale. Very few deaths recorded so far.
The terrible tragedy (the massive earthquake) measuring 7.6 on the rictor scale with its epicenter in the Hindukush mountain exhibited all three characteristics.
We conclude that the magnitude of the earthquake on the rictor scale has no corralation with the prior and post amplitudes on the graph.
Others apparently use it consciously (or maybe not) with a meaning having to do with sexual attractiveness ― there is an urban dictionary entry for it.

One is called “The Landers Quake†that was 7.6 on the rectors scale that was Bear Mountain Quake that was 6.5.
The situation exculated and the female owner was off the rector scale, pointing and raising her voice in front of all diners,in the cramped dining room!!!

My dad used to have a story about some nuns who decided to take a fling at the race course (to increase the offerings for the poor, of course), and put their money on a horse named Benedictus. The bookies who took the money decided the nuns must know something supernatural was about to occur, so they invested all their cash on the horse as well.
