keep a weathered eye out/on

By all means worry about the drip-drip of bad news from hedge funds and subprime lenders in the west, but keep a weathered eye eastwards.

Keep a weathered eye on other guests traveling through, you never know who you’ll see. Read more about Country Hall of Fame

Ho there! Keep a weathered eye on yer search fer treasure.

More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the date, so keep a weathered eye out for future updates.

That said, you’ll want to keep a weathered eye out for any issues the house might have while you’re touring it for the first time.

There seem to be plenty of them, including in some published materials, so likely some people think this is the normal phrase. It might involve blending of a weather eye with a jaundiced eye or something similar with a past-participial adjective. But it might (also or instead) have the eggcornish motivation of weathered meaning something like “experienced, having been through lots of heavy weather and ∴ wise, wary, unlikely to be fooled by appearances” and so forth. Do you reckon?

Re: keep a weathered eye out/on

Works for me, David. The notion of protracted vigilance despite all that furious nature may hurl at that tender blinking aqueous orb suggests a strong likelihood of becoming worn and weary in the process. Here’s an unlikely simbling to keep it company:

Nina buys the next round, and Dominic passes, knowing he’ll have to keep a withered eye on his tragically lightweight girlfriend.

And another, which might have possibilities were there more of them.

Publishers are now forced to keep a whither eye on the most loved fanfiction stories on such sites.

He leaned out over the railings to ensure all was safe – it seemed so, so he relaxed and kept a whither eye on the propellers and the dock.

Re: keep a weathered eye out/on

I like the whither eye especially: an eye attuned to the direction the object of its observation is headed. I guess the withered eye has been devastated by what it has seen.
