op-ed

The New York Times’s announcement of the retirement of its op-ed page may have surprised people (as it did me) that “op-ed” is not a slangy way of saying “opinion-editorial.” It actually means “opposite the editorial page.” A stealth-eggcorn for many, I would think.

It was for me, though it is not a word I have used often, even passively.
