Contronyms

I know we discussed these things recently, where Kem was asking for examples of de-nominal verbs which mean applying vs. removing the noun, but I’m not finding that discussion easily. Anyway, “contronyms” are discussed here ; they are words that are their own antonyms, like dust which can mean to apply a powder or to remove dust (or another powder).

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

Re: Contronyms

The earlier discussion is here: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … hp?id=7260

“Stone” and “seed” would fit in nicely with that discussion—are we adding or removing stones and seeds.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
