A "glean" in someone's eye, for "gleam"

I found this in a recent NY Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/07/scien … ef=science).

“Long before the shuttle was a glean in NASA’s eye — long before NASA even existed — there was the idea of a space telescope. ”

Given the proximity of “m” and “n” on the keyboard, it could be a typo, but it’s hard to say; I thought it was worth submitting in case others have (or will) run across it.
