On a newscaste:
Voting for Trump is like cutting off your nose despite your face.
An internet search suggests it is standard or at least acceptable for some. But what does it mean?
.
(1) Your face is already ugly enough. Might as well cut off your nose and make it worse.
.
(2) Your face actually looks pretty good, but in spite of that you are fixing to cut your nose off.
.
If either analysis is active in people’s minds and the phrase is the standard one for them, it’s an eggcorn.
.
The possibility of a machine speech-recognition problem should not be discounted.
.
(“Newscaste” is also documented fwiw. Ought to mean the high-falutin’ social stratum of pundits, or something of the sort.)
