It scarcely seems possible that brakes could be more familiar than bricks but expressing something weighty and serious making a sudden and unexpected descent, or abrupt halt, does have something brake-like about it. Likelier to be predictive text or transliteration error no doubt, but I recall failing to convince a group of youths that coal burns. One or two of them had heard of it yet none had ever seen an open fire and they weren’t about to be hoodwinked by this old loon.
I never thought she would hit me with a ton of brakes. to say she’s pregnant with twins.
It hit me like a ton of brakes when I came into school, “why am I learning about the hearts and lungs here?”

It’s gonna hit you like a ton of brakes. But I want a divorce.
I don’t think I’ve ever worked for a company before that sets so many traps for its employees , this company loves to put their staff down – they constantly want you working under severe pressure and stress , they watch you every second of every day and come down on you like a ton of brakes if you call goes over 4 minutes ( not sure what they expect us to do if a customer is talking).
