'swings and arrows'

Probably an idiom blend mixing Hamlet with swings and roundabouts. It is possible that some people are unfamiliar with the sling, which children used to encounter when first learning of David and Goliath. The sling is a formidable weapon, capable in skilled hands of greater range and greater accuracy than the arrow, and often more lethal given a projectile the size of a lemon. In Scotland the Romans used pierced lead bullets an ounce in weight as a terror weapon, shrieking or whistling as they flew through the air,

Agreed, Kem, it’s a jewel. “Strings and arrows” too. Then there’s stings and arrows, also in the database.

To be or not to be that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the stings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or take up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing them, end them. (TPCN Great Quotations)
