To swallow a story, claim, evidence etc. “hook, line and sinker” is to be completely deceived, to ‘take the bait’ without exercising reasonable restraint or caution. People who have no experience of fishing with a rod and line may have eggcorned ‘sinker’ into ‘stinker’, thereby acknowledging the perpetrator of such stories and claims?
