Profiter roll

On another message board this morning “like a profiter roll”.

Google brings up 70 hits, including this “Profiter Roll Sundae £2.75 each” from 1998 http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/jim.shead/ … 98mayL.htm

Re: Profiter roll

For the benefit of us slow-witted types with aging brains, it’s helpful—in the case of less obvious eggcorns—to put the original form in the header. After a moment’s puzzlement (“Prophet Errol?” “Professor Iterole?”), I finally hit on “profiterole.”

The eggcorn’s rare—most of the Google hits are puns—but it’s an excellent (and delicious) one. I’ve added some more documentation:

Anastasia turned, chocolate on her chin and a Profiter roll in her mouth to see the beautiful president glide into the room.

remove the middle of profiter roll then fill with whipped cream that has icing sugar and vanilla essence in it and place top on profiter roll

“Anyway, how are you two enjoying eating food?” Cordy asked as she eat a profiter
roll.

Re: Profiter roll

What shall it profit a man to gain a kingdom and lose his roll. . . .

Re: Profiter roll

I love this one!

Does it not also point to a likely movement in syllabic stress by users of the eggcorn?

(ProFITerole – PROFiter roll)

Re: Profiter roll

Fifi – interesting thought in the pronunciation. Not heard it in the wild yet, but I can foresee many a happy (if unhealthy) hour hanging around the patisserie counter doing field research …

Pat, thanks for the tip and the new refs.
