'air on the side of caution' for 'err on the side of caution'

This is fairly common- 500+ ghits. I’m not convinced that semantic reinterpetation is taking place, but it might be. Perhaps ‘to air o9n the side of caution’ is to leave air (or space) between yourself and a dangerous situation. Examples:

When hitchhiking, it’s smarter to air on the side of caution when accepting a ride. … rance.html

It is always better to air on the side of caution when in an accident and have
especially potentially serious problems like back and neck injuries checked. … njury.html

When it comes to matters of ethics, we must always air on the side of caution
and observe the spirit of the law: full financial disclosure at all levels…

...but certainly post 9/11, one would think in terms of intelligence estimates
on WMD’s, our government officials should air on the side of caution.

You have to air on the side of caution when you have 300 people in the cabin.

We didn’t have any indication that there was asbestos contamination but we wanted to air on the side of caution.

Keep your ear to the ground, keep yourself educated on email issues in the news, and always air on the side of caution.

... until it is studied by an independent group conducting a true blind study, I would air on the side of caution when giving it to my child.
