TIMMS an eggcorn variant?

Even academics who work in the field of assessment can’t get this acronym right… they write TIMMS (Tim’s) when they ought to be writing TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Survey). Does this count as a special case of an eggcorn, or is it ‘just’ an error? Even the official TIMSS websites google-link from TIMMS. Here are some examples:

http://www.isbe.state.il.us/assessment/TIMSS.htm

http://direct.bl.uk/bld/PlaceOrder.do?U … archengine

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShAr … &listSrc=Y

http://www.nrich.maths.org/public/viewe … cale=en_US

... just google TIMMS and mathematics to see just how many times this is mis-acronymed

Re: TIMMS an eggcorn variant?

Just to clarify… it used to be the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), but now it’s the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (still TIMSS), but it’s never been TIMMS!
