I don’t really want to dwell on this subject too long because it tends more toward the Mondegreen area (mistaken song lyrics) than eggcorns based on idiomatic language usage.

At any rate, I heard a discussion on the radio today about an opera which I heard to be “Deflate-a-mouse.” Hmmm, it must be some modern effort centered around what happens to the MIckey Mouse balloon after the Macy’s Day Parade (or whichever parade). Well, it didn’t occur to me that they were really talking about “Die Fledermaus” until I heard a mention of Johann Strauss. This just shows how one’s mind can invent images when one is multi-tasking and listening to the radio.

The other example was Emailed to me by my sister-in-law who wanted to contribute “one of those egghorn things.” She was listening to a late night talk show and someone mentioned “Sliced Alone”—which she later figured out was really “Sly Stallone.”

(By the way, I sort of like the mistaken term “egghorn” since it has a yin-yang feel to it… An egg is a symbol of Christ, and a horn is perhaps symbolic of the devil. So, an “egghorn” must be a combination of good and evil: That is to say, we’re not sure whether these “egghorns” are a good thing or a bad thing!)
