monger/mongrel

This one cracks me up. Saw “hate mongrel” on reader comments posted about an article. Googled it and found 500 hits for “hate mongrel” vs 102k hits for “hate monger” and near 1mil for “hatemonger”. It fits the classic eggcorn model: word substitution that sounds the same or similar, and the substitution still works in the original context to a great degree. Hell, the “mad dog” imagery may in fact do a better service for the idea conveyed than the original!

Found even better results for warmonger/war mongrel.

Re: monger/mongrel

Sorry! I should have done an eggcorn search first! Patschwieterman has already done this one. I thought it would have stuck in my head, since it’s such a funny one. Oh well, please learn from my mistake and search before you post. I’ll try better.
