Peak for peek

I find it particularly disturbing that authors/editors do this! I was reading a romance novel (“Hummingbird” by Lavyrle Spencer) and the word “peak” (crest/top) was used when it should have been “peek” (as in looked quickly). I don’t have the book with me at the moment to give the exact quote, but what really struck me was that it wasn’t just one occurrence – it was in that book 2 or 3 times!
