“Bloodcurdling” means “arousing fear.” Curdling per se refers to the formation of curds by coagulation. It also refers to the spoiling or souring of something. I guess the original imagery is simply an allusion to an adverse physical reaction—inspired by fear, no less.
Its hard to say whether there is much sense added to an alternative imagery when “curdling” is replaced by “curling.” One can imagine a person curling up in response to horror, or hair curling when exposed to adverse conditions. It’s possible these notions are transfered to one’s blood.
