The “sinking feeling” is a feeling caused by uneasiness or apprehension. To some, the imagery of “sinking” is a bit remote, and perhaps that motivated its eggcorning to “stinking.” Because, if the situation stinks, it may give you that stinking feeling.
I’ve heard this eggcorn over a dozen times in my life, but my wife says she has never heard it. I wonder how widespread it is.
