too big for one's bridges

While talking to my gardener the other day, he said that a local landscape contractor had gotten too big for his bridges.

Re: too big for one's bridges

Welcome to the Eggcorn Forum, Bobc. The eggcorn you mention is a variant of one that I proposed a while back…

Don’t burn your BRITCHES (bridges) by jorkel Contribute! 0 2006-11-09 04:48:16 by jorkel

Actually, your eggcorn works in the opposite direction, so it might be a distinct find. The task will be to elaborate on the imagery of “bridges” which gives “too big for his bridges” a legitimate sense.

By the way, if you ever want to search this website for duplication—before posting—you can click on “Search” in the red menu above and insert a keyword in the search window.

If you’re too big for your bridges you’re gonna have trouble getting anywhere, aren’t you?
