'free simple' for 'fee simple'

A fee simple title is the most common, and least encumbered, form of ownership of land or real estate. (‘fee’ derives from ‘fief!’). When you own something fee simple, you’re free to do what you want with it, so the substitution is a natural one. Examples:

I wonder if they think a “free simple” title is cheaper than a “fee simple” title.

After all, it should be free, right?

Hmm. Isn’t ‘fee simple’ an eggcorn, too, then, for ‘fief simple’? Historical eggcorns! Eggcorns through the ages.
